I don't want a default location--is this possible?

Added by Linda Brobeck 3 months ago

When users go to my school location page, it shows the list of schools and shows a distance to each school. I'm not sure where the starting point is. I would prefer there be no starting point--just show the US map with all the pin points and below that list of all schools. When they add their address info, then it would narrow it down and show the distances for the schools in the selected range.

I am having the same issue -- cannot find where it is addressed in the Docs -- the initial distance is over 500 miles to any of my locations
need to set that to a point central to my locations or some other spot

Under map settings try this:

  • Set your default radius to 5000 miles.
  • Check off "Immediately Show Locations"

If you do not want the list of locations to show up by default, check off "Disable Initial Directory" as well.

Thanks,

I have my default radius set to 25 miles -- no businesses are more than that radius apart

I would like to see an initial map centered on the county that I am doing this for

and any mileage from that center point -- or alternatively centered on the county courthouse

I added a business about 20 miles from the others and the map then centered above Papua New Guniea
removing that put the map back in the US but zoomed out to the entire US

-- also am interested if there is a good way to scrape data from yellow pages or google places listings to import - but that's another ?

so maybe I need to know where to set the Map Home?

from the manual --

Immediately Show Locations

When turned on the map will start off showing locations versus the center of the geographic area you've selected for your map "home". When this is set the first N locations (set with "Default Locations Shown") will be "pinned" on the map and the text directory will be shown below the map. The Plus edition has a setting to allow you to turn off the directory and only show the pinned locations.

You map "home" is the center of the country you have selected.

2.4 beta is available from the file download section here. It may solve some of your problems.

There are 2 new features in the release that are only available to people that purchase the 2.4 upgrade pack. The 2.4 upgrade will appear on the general settings page when we launch the final release of 2.4 on WordPress. The upgrade fee for the new features will be set at $1.

The new paid upgrade pack features include:

  • Custom Themes - you can now create customized CSS files and automatically selected them from the display settings. Upgrades/patches will not overwrite your custom CSS files. We've created a simple dark listing theme and will add more advanced custom themes on future builds.
  • Center The Map - you will be able to choose ANY ADDRESS as the default location on which the map will center.

Details on both features are noted in the documentation:

With version 2.3.1 or earlier:

The center point on the map was one of these two options:

If "Immediately Show Locations" is enabled show the middle of the first N locations.

A couple of things to note here:

  • The first locations are determined by the order they were entered into your location list. First entered = first listed.
  • The "N locations" part is determined by the number of locations you enter as the quantity to show by default.
  • Locations with certain international locations would break the auto-locate/zoom feature and center in the pacific (lat/long 0,0).

If "Immediately Show Locations is NOT checked* show the center of the country that you have selected for Google Maps. The zoom level determines how far in or out to set the initial zoom level on the map.

With version 2.4 or later

The center point on the map was one of these two options:

If "Immediately Show Locations" is enabled show the middle of the first N locations.

A couple of things to note here:

  • The first locations are determined by HOW CLOSE THEY ARE TO THE CENTER OF THE COUNTRY. This is a change from pre 2.4 versions.
  • The "N locations" part is determined by the number of locations you enter as the quantity to show by default.

If "Immediately Show Locations is NOT checked* show the center of the country that you have selected for Google Maps. The zoom level determines how far in or out to set the initial zoom level on the map.

NEW If You Purchase The 2.4 Upgrade Pack

With 2.4 you now have the option to purchase an upgrade pack. Since this is the first time we are trying this the upgrade pack will be sold for $1. In addition to a better custom themes (CSS) system, you also get the set my default location setting.

With this new setting you will be able to enter any address you'd like. The map will use that point as the center of the map whether using the "Immediately Show Locations" setting or not.

With Immediately Show Locations turned on it works much like described above, except it shows the first N locations that are closest to the address you entered as the "map center".

With Immediately Show Locations turned off it will show the address you entered with the map zoomed to whatever zoom level you have set.
